Kirsten's Story

Over the last 20 years, Kirsten Shockey has become a leading expert on fermentation, transforming her robust home practice into an international educational brand. A writer, teacher, author, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Ferment Works, Shockey’s mission is to spread fermentation knowledge as far and wide as possible.

To her, wholistic wellbeing means connecting people with healthy food systems. She believes that anybody anywhere can begin to foster better health practices by simply fermenting something, since besides creating wonderful flavors these techniques are essential to a healthy microbiome and increased nutrition. For Shockey, this collaboration with microbes to transform food is the beginning of a systemic change.

The author of Homebrewed Vinegar, Shockey has also co-authored four books with her husband Christopher: The Big Book of Cidermaking, Fiery Ferments, Fermented Vegetables, and Miso, Tempeh, Natto & Other Tasty Ferments. The Shockeys live, farm, and ferment in Oregon’s Applegate Valley.
