About this Recipe

Tea has always been a comfort to me. This herbal blend is great for fall and winter, or whenever you need to be comforted. The combination of ingredients reminds me of people who have comforted me, like my grandmother. My grandmama (as we called her) always kept treats like gingersnaps, Mary Janes (a molasses candy), and black licorice in her pantry. Even though she’s no longer earthside, drinking this tea feels like my grandmama’s hug in a cup. I recommend drinking this tea straight so you can taste the notes of each ingredient.

The Benefits

The elderberries have anti-viral properties, and rose petals are good for hydration. Ginger is anti-inflammatory, oatstraw calms the body, and nettles are high in nutrients. Bonus: The rose and elderberry add a charming flavor, so you don’t necessarily need to add any sweetener.

Note: Dried elderberries, rose petals, ginger, oatstraw, and nettle are available at specialty herb shops and online.

Ingredients

Makes about 3/4 cup (40 g) of tea blend
  • 2 Tbsp (10 g) dried elderberries
  • 2 Tbsp (8 g) rose petals
  • 2 Tbsp (10 g) dried ginger
  • 2 Tbsp (6 g) dried oatstraw
  • 2 Tbsp (6 g) dried nettle

Directions

  1. Step 1
In a mixing bowl, using a wooden spoon, combine the berries, rose petals, and herbs, making sure not to crush the ingredients. Store in an airtight container.
  2. Step 2
To brew the tea: Put 4 tsp of the mixture inside your teapot’s strainer basket. Bring 2 cups (480 ml) water to a boil and pour over the tea blend. Cover the teapot and allow the infusion to steep 10 to 15 minutes. Strain the tea into your cups. Enjoy 1 to 4 cups of this tea daily.

Level Up: Add a drop of molasses, and this will truly taste like a gingersnap
