A Wedding To Remember in Victoria

Under the deep blue Canadian skies, I attended a beautiful inter-faith wedding that reminded me what community wellbeing is all about.

Late last month, I visited Victoria, off Canada’s scenic Pacific coast, to attend the wedding of my long-time friend’s daughter. It was an inter-faith wedding, a vibrant cultural celebration of a connection between a Bahai and a Hindu family. An intimate affair, with just the couple’s and their families’ closest friends in attendance, it was over in 45 minutes flat!

Back home in India we say, you don’t marry an individual, you marry their social tribe. This wedding was a heartfelt example of this — it was amazing to see the mirth, warmth, and camaraderie with which the couple’s extended families and friends came together to celebrate their big day. It reminded me the significance of weddings in holding together our social fabric, and how they evoke the same emotions the world over, across cultures and traditions. As we raised a toast to the newlyweds, everyone opened their hearts to feel the love and bless the couple.

Under the deep blue Canadian skies, as I met old friends and made new ones, it elevated my day. I felt thankful to share in the joy of the newlyweds. After all, community wellbeing is all about finding joy in nurturing relationships beyond our own tiny circles with those in our extended social tribe.
